THE REMAINING BAT BRICKS, AND PREPARING TO PUT THE SOIL BACK

 

As well as the 3 bat bricks in each of the new sections of arch, we needed to add a further 2 in the centre 'good' arch.  This required careful cutting out to make space and the bat bricks to be cemented in with the usual lime mortar mix.

         

 

In addition, we wanted to support the front section of arch with concrete blocks, similar to the rear arch.  To this effect we have dug shallow pits and used bricks as shuttering, with a couple of steel pegs for extra support.  This will insure the new section of arch does not try to creep out under the pressure of the soil above.  One has been partially filled with cement so far.

      

 

Another job to do before we can replace the soil is to remove the shuttering.  To enable this to happen, the cement around the bottom of the Acrow props had to be cut away:
