We needed some form of protection to stop youngsters falling into the ice house well, and for this some form of balcony seemed appropriate.

To this end we started looking round for a model to base it on, and those on the top floor of Waterperry House came to mind.

From this we built a mock-up, using a steel strip to mimic the curve of the walls just under the edge of the aperture.

We had intended to use the excellent company 'The Forge' at Thame, but unfortunately they were stacked out with work.  Instead we found the Redcroft Forge Blacksmiths in South Ockendon, Essex who made an excellent job of it.

All we needed to do now was fit it!
